Aardlek

AARDLEK is a collective that specialises in street arts and site-specific theatre, starting from the reality of the public space. Streets, parks, squares and building sites serve as scenery. Aardlek spins a world of obsurd logic inhabited by displaced daily routines and familiar, yet odd-ball, characters. The artistic team are drawn from all corners of the arts and design. Collaborations between dancer, musician, visual artist, architect and designer offers such diversity to guarantee unexpected angles and edgy performances. Poetic environments are created in a laboratory embracing simple, yet ingenious means. The public are stimulated to participate in seeking the best experience, even under a state of mild confusion. Aardlek works on the edge between the obvious and the obscure; driven by curiosity and fascination.

Since 2009 Sarah Kate is guest choreographer and performer with Aardlek, where she is right at home with her background in both dance and visual art. She has performed with the collective in festivals, spectacles, royal openings and toured in Austria and The Netherlands. Her group choreographies have attracted high praise. Hi-lights include a dance made for 8 huge archive cabinets, where dancing heads pop up and criss-cross rhythms, colourful office workers leap on top in a relay race and move in chess board precision. Another choreography for the grand finale of a graduation parade was no mean feat with 78 dancers in a cast of 160. In just three days Sarah kate worked with the lively group weaving together dance improvisation, brazilian and urban dance for an explosive celebration joined by musicians and crazy costumes!
